Debate Tourney!
This past weekend was crazy...or moreso than usual. It's always a little out of the ordinary around here--we've come to consider mildly crazy as normal. But anyhoo, this past weekend there was a debate tourney in Winchester, VA, and the whole family went. Actually, quite a lot of people from our church went--it was really cool. My brothers (Chris and Tim) were debating, my other brothers (Andrew and Kirk) were timing, and Mom, Dad, and I were judging. There were about 26 teams competing for the two top slots predominantly. This was somewhat of a different tournament. There were no qualifying slots for the Region IX Invitational, but the top two finishing teams got direct passage to Nationals in San Diego. So, great motivation.
Both of my brothers did very well, Chris making it as far as semifinals with his partner. In the act of judging, flowing, and observing I had the opportunity to hear, and hear of, some really odd cases. How many of you think that it would be feasible to sell ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) to the Canadians in order to fund a space progam designed to harvest helium from the moon? This year's resolution is: That the United States should change its energy policy to substantially reduce its dependence on foreign oil. Rather open-ended but that's how it goes this year. Some of the other plans for Bio-Diesel, Magnetic-Levitation, Hemp, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Hydrogen, and Thermal-Depolymerization can be run well or poorly depending on the team.
What I decided was that as a judge I should capitalize on my position and make my own name tag: "Hi, my name is Mr. Destiny/Fate, be nice to me!" But so far I've thought better of it which is probably in my best interest. We've got another tournament coming up this Friday in Charlottesville, and another in Annandale a couple weeks following. If I survive (and I'm not even debating!)...that would be nice.
After all there's the Liberty Ball, some folks coming to visit, and life in general. Not to mention frisbee! There's always frisbee...:-)
